Aquatic Center

Welcome to the Carla and Ellsworth Peterson Aquatic Center of the Door
County YMCA in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
August 19th, 2001, marked the culmination of this project which began in January,
2000, when the Carla and Ellsworth Peterson Foundation, Inc. and the Fred
J. Peterson Foundation, Inc. gifted the funds to the Door County YMCA to
erect a
state-of-the-art aquatic facility. Their gift also provided a
dollar-for-dollar challenge to start an endowment fund drive. To date, the
“Ensuring Our Mission for the Future Endowment Campaign” has reached
$2,323,151.91 of its five-year goal to raise $6,000,000.
In February of 2000, SDS Architects, Inc. of Eau Claire won the bid to
design the aquatic center and adjacent new spaces, and in September 2000, Miron Construction Company of Menasha began the ten-month building
process.
The competitive pool is an eight-lane, 25-yard pool with two one-meter
diving boards, holding 258,000 gallons of water, which will be kept at a temperature of 82 to 83 degrees. The recreational pool has great water park
features including zero depth entry, a water mushroom, water jets and a
90’ water slide! The recreational/therapeutic pool holds 90,000 gallons of
water maintained at a temperature of 88 to 89 degrees. The whirlpool
features seating for up to sixteen people and will be kept at a
temperature of 103 degrees.
As we joined together to celebrate another milestone at the Door County
YMCA, we expressed appreciation for the tremendous support of our members,
donors, volunteers, employees and program participants. Our success
through teamwork has caused our Y to grow into one of the strongest in the
state.
We gratefully acknowledge and thank Carla and Ellsworth Peterson for their
vision, commitment and this wonderful donation to the Door County YMCA for
the community. It’s and incredible gift!
