In early 2006, Don Petersilka suffered a stroke that resulted in a six-week stay at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Upon release, he received physical therapy at Ministry Door County Rehab Services. When Medicare deemed that Don’s treatment was complete, he and his wife, Janice, started looking for a place where Don could continue to get the professional care and physical exercise that he needed.
This is when they joined the YMCA! Don was hesitant to try the pool, so he looked to our Lifestyle Center, where he found a recumbent eliptical machine that fit his needs perfectly. That, along with the kind and caring attention of Laurie Thiede, Mary Claire McHugh and all of the YMCA staff, helped ensure that Don was well on his way to continued success! An added bonus to joining the Y, according to Janice, was the wonderful new friendships they made and how much Don looked forward to his next visit! Janice also enjoys her time at the Y because not only is she thankful that her husband continues to improve and get the exercise and attention he needs, but she also has time to exercise her body, relax her mind and enjoy time with friends. The Y experience has been and continues to be a very important part of their lives.
