DCY Swim: Season Starts with a Splash

DCY swimmers during the midnight season kickoff practice

From Director of Competitive Swimming Mike McHugh

The 2020-21 DCY Swim season started with a tremendous surge of new swimmers! We are still entering swimmers, but we have surpassed the 130 swimmer goal. On typical practice nights, over 100 swimmers are practicing in Sturgeon Bay and Northern Door facilities.

We kicked off the season with a midnight practice, where we set our team goals for the season. Although very difficult to surpass the phenomenal 2019-2020 season, our team decided to set the goal of placing second as a team in the state championship meet this year. We placed third last year, tying our best season finale ever. We also set process and character goals for our team during the midnight practice.

We have also set a goal of eclipsing the number of state qualifiers from last year (54). Unlike most sports, swimmers have to qualify for the state championships each year, with the standard set at the 8th-place finish for each event from the previous year.

Our Dolphin Club program, meant to bridge the gap between progressive swim lessons and swim team, is once again at maximum capacity. What an incredible time to join the largest program in Door County!
